His story
Will lived with low back pain for many years. A few months after his ReActiv8 was placed, he travelled to Hawaii and spent a beautiful trip there with his family.
“He remains one of my happiest patients.”Dr. Diebo
About ReActiv8
ReActiv8, made by Mainstay Medical, is an FDA-approved implanted stimulator for chronic low back pain linked to the multifidus, the deepest muscle along the spine, which steadies each level as you move. Through a small outpatient procedure, thin leads are placed beside the nerve that controls the multifidus. At home, you start two 30-minute sessions a day with a remote.
It is meant for a specific group: people whose pain is mechanical and traced to multifidus dysfunction on history, examination and MRI, who have not improved with therapy and other conservative care, and who are not candidates for spine surgery. It is not a treatment for scoliosis itself or for pinched nerves.
Disclosure. Dr. Diebo serves on an advisory board for Mainstay Medical, which makes ReActiv8.
What Will’s story illustrates
- Not every case of long-standing back pain leads to spine surgery. For a specific group of patients, an option such as ReActiv8 may be worth asking about.
- Every case is different. One patient’s story is not a prediction of anyone else’s result; that depends on a full evaluation.
